Which Fader Is The Greatest?
Which of the Five Faders matters most? The logical answer is “my Fader!” :)
This question makes sense, but it isn't the most useful one. Often, the underlying concern is finding justification to challenge a leader or team member who is out of balance or unhealthy.
The reality is that you want a healthy Five Faders team. When all the Faders are functioning to their potential, you have a team with:
beauty and usefulness
unity and belonging
devotion and depth
wisdom and capability
excellence and transcendence
Which one do you want to go without?
Instead of asking 'which is most important,' focus on these two questions:
How can I disciple my leader or team members to be a more passionate follower of Jesus?
How can I help my leader or team member become more balanced and healthy with their Faders?
Now those are great questions!
I think most pastors want leaders who are more connected to Jesus. Although they want good music, a positive relational team dynamic, growing leaders, and solid organization, they want to avoid their leaders and teams burning out, falling into sin, or just being happy playing in the shallow end of spirituality.
What they really want is for the worship team to be a team of worshipers. I mean that you want to be known not for what you do, but for who you are. You are a worshiper.
I can’t fault them for that. It’s the same thing Jesus said the Father is looking for in John 4:23: “Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.”
The kind of worshiper, not the kind of worship.
It’s not lost on me that He is worthy of worship and desires a certain kind (in the Spirit and in truth.). But what He’s seeking, desiring, and requiring is people who are worshipers.
That’s not something you learn on YouTube. You learn it with an open bible, an open spirit, perhaps a tuned guitar, and a closed door. In secret. Go there often! I’m not kidding. There’s an epidemic of worship leader and teams who aren’t worshipers. They haven’t learned how to be one. Yet!
The second question of how to become more healthy and balanced in my highest Fader is answered like this.
Study the Five Faders book and figure out what your highest Fader is. Get to know the pitfalls particular to you. Is it being perfectionistic, oversensitive, critical, lecturing, or micromanaging?
Being appropriately balanced in your highest Fader is a lot like humility. It’s not thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking of yourself less.
For example, pick the three that you typically ignore and begin to invest in musicianship, relationships, hiddenness, learning, or planning.
Or take your eyes of your typical focus and pay attention to the product, people, Presence, principles, or process.
