Noche de Encuentro

On Friday, we launched something that had been growing in our hearts for a long time. We call it “Noche de Encuentro” (Night of Encounter). It’s about 90 minutes of deep worship (like the Breathing Room events we used to do in the States) followed by an after-party of feasting and fun.

About 30 worshipers gathered. Some of the youth stood beside me and sang so passionately that afterward, I asked them, “Can I take y’all with me wherever I lead worship?”

In addition to the majority coming from our church, one pastor couple and two youths from other congregations joined us. We want this to be where leaders from different congregations come to be refreshed and return to their churches with a new fire.

We kicked off the night by reading Psalm 149, which reminded us of all that happens when the high praises of God are in our mouths. There was freedom. It was beautiful. God was honored, and His children were encouraged.

But getting there was a fight! As expected, the week leading up to it was fraught with challenges. (and the days following haven’t been a picnic either)

The water went out that morning. I found the problem about half a mile up the street in the 5-20 foot deep ditch that carries the hose from the main line to the farm. The hose had come apart due to a small landslide caused by the previous day’s heavy rain. I had to dislodge the hose while holding onto a tree to keep from falling ten feet to a water-filled dropoff below. Standard missionary life, I guess. (video)

There’s a bunch of other stuff that I won’t bore you with, little giants that stood in our way. But the LORD…He always causes us to walk in triumph.

And that’s why I really wanted to tell you about this.

Each of us is watching and looking to see what the Father is up to so we can join Him. Even when we say yes to His invitation, things will try to trip us up. But as we let Him hold our hands, hear his encouragement to be strong and courageous, and stand firm in Him, we’ll take that dadgum ground step by step.

So, what ground are you eyeing up today?

Love,

Dave, Heather, Aspen, Clementine, Louis, Juliana, Huxley, and Caspian Helmuth
