Little Tests
Week after week, we stand in church during worship and wait for the lyrics to appear. Well, most of us never see the lyrics, but our congregation does.
My little imagination had the following scenario play out on one such Sunday.
The faithful lyrics operator is back there silently asking us, “Do you know the words? I’m going to wait until you’ve gotten the first two words out to put the words up. I wouldn’t want you to depend too much on those words. I want you to internalize them. You’re welcome.”
Ok, probably not. But thinking of “late lyrics” as “little tests” keeps me from getting angry at the projectionist. Oh, I want to swing my head around and glare at whoever happens to be back there. My internal Karen wants to yell “come on!!” But that’s not the spirit of worship.
I know some people could care less about the lyrics. But if you find yourself in the camp that gets frustrated when they are not up just before you take your breath to sing the next line, perhaps this will help. Take it as a personal challenge to memorize the lyrics. And try not to get so caught up in the lyrics and focus on the One you’re singing to.
