Look Each Other In The Eyes
The best wedding day advice I received: “Don’t forget to look each other in the eyes.”
With all the details, all the planning, all the preparation, all the stress, all the expectations, all the pressure…did I mention the details? It’s easy to miss the moment.
I don’t know that we forgot any for the ceremony, but the reception…
We put people in numbered groups for the tables and then forgot to number the tables!
We didn’t have any trash cans available for after the meal.
We didn’t have a knife for the cake-cutting ceremony.
And I wasn’t like your average guy who just wants to show up on their wedding day having had little to no say in any of the details. I wanted to touch every little detail. I had very specific ideas of what I wanted.
That kind of tactical negotiation made for a great training ground for marriage. (You can read between those lines any way you’d like!)
But the wedding ceremony was beautiful. Candlelit. Simple. Song-ful. I even played and sang Amy Grant’s “Say Once More” as my beautiful bride Heather walked down the aisle. I held it together until her glistening eyes were close enough for me to notice. 😭
Several times during the ceremony, those words came to mind: “Don’t forget to look each other in the eyes.”
And it made those moments both more meaningful and more memorable. As I write this, we plan to celebrate 21 years this October.
The flow of the ceremony, the details of the decor, the choice of songs, the slideshow, the printed programs…all important, but nothing compared to the moments Heather and I shared, locking eyes in the presence of God and those witnesses.
The same will be true at your church this Sunday.
